Gavin Dalton pulled up as close behind the wrecked car as he could get, his headlights on bright. It sat nose first in a ditch, filled with water up to the floorboards. Smoke plumed from its engine. The driverâs door stood open. It didnât look as if anyone was inside. Where had the driver gone?
Today of all days, this was the last thing he needed. Heâd heard the noise that sounded like vehicles colliding up the mountain, and his conscience wouldnât let him not go to render aid.
Barring the day heâd buried his father, today had been the worst day of his life. Heâd had to say goodbye to his beloved Grandmother Ava. Even after seeing her in the casket, he still couldnât believe his rock was gone. Sheâd practically raised him. Heâd never really known his mother, since sheâd died when he was still a baby, right up here on this same mountain. Her car had run off the road one winterâs day. It had been just Gavin, his dad and Ava for as long as he could remember.
When he got the call that Ava had passed, it had floored him. Ava had suffered a massive heart attack while sitting out back on her favorite bench, no doubt watching the sunset over Darlan Mountain, as she had for going on seventy years.
Gavin had been doing the same thing minutes earlier when heâd heard the crash.
As a CIA agent, heâd seen a lot of bad things. His instincts just naturally veered toward trouble. Turned out, this time he was right.
While he continued to stare at the wreckage before him, he noticed something that didnât jibe with the car ending up in the ditch of its own accord. The back bumper was crumpled in several spots. It appeared someone had deliberately forced it off the road. He scanned the area. His concern for the missing driver doubled.
Always lend a hand, Gavin. Mountain folk look out for one another. He could almost hear his grandmother reminding him of this. Ava had lived that creed throughout her life. She never once failed to lend a hand when someone was in need.
Even though heâd been gone for ten years, he understood why Ava had loved this place so much. It was in her blood. His, too. This was one of the reasons it was so hard to think about selling her home. Still, now that she was gone, he couldnât imagine living there, and his job as a member of the CIA specialized antiterrorist unit known as the Scorpions took him out of the country for months at a time.
Excuses...all of them. The real reason he didnât want to hold on to the house was that he saw his father everywhere around the place. The brutal way Charles Daltonâs life had been taken from him would forever mar Gavinâs memories of life on the mountain. Shot to death by his best friend and business partner.
And so heâd come to a difficult decision. He planned to get in touch with the local real estate agent the next day.
